A Case of Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis Caused by Xanthomonas maltophilia

Abstract
As the number of patients with prosthetic valves has increased, prosthetic valve endocarditis occurring after prosthetic valve replacement has been recognized with increasing frequency. A variety of organisms have been implicated in prosthetic
valve
endocarditis: however, gram-positive cocci are most common and gram-negative bacilli are less common. Xanthomonas maltophilia is a motile, free living, gram-negative, aerobic bacillus with multitrichous polar flagella. X. maltophilia is being
isolated
from clinical specimens with increasing frequency. Because of the increasing number of debilitated patients and the selective pressure for use of broad spectrum antimicrobial agents in the hospital setting, this trend may continue. We report our
experience with a case of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by X. maltophilia.
